Canada hints at NATO action in Pakistan
TORONTO: Canadian opposition leader Stephane Dion on Wednesday called for “intervention” in Pakistan if the war on terror is to succeed.
Dion, a leader of the Liberal Party likely to win the elections this year, said NATO could be forced to take action inside Pakistan if President Pervez Musharraf’s government failed to stop the movement of terrorists to Afghanistan.
After a two-day visit to Afghanistan to take stock of the Canadian combat mission around Kandahar, he said the NATO-led mission against the Taliban would not succeed unless terrorists were denied entry from Pakistan.
“We are going to have to discuss that very actively if they are not able to deal with it on their own. We could consider that option with the NATO forces in order to help Pakistan help us pacify Afghanistan,” Dion said.
He said Afghan leaders told him during his trip about terrorist hideouts in Pakistan. The porous border with Pakistan was hampering the war on terror as the Taliban and Al Qaeda slipped into the inaccessible Tribal Areas of Pakistan under duress, Dion said. online
