Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) on Wednesday announced countrywide protest on Monday (January 7) against PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.
The announcement was made after the APDM component parties met here. Mehmood Khan Achakzai chaired the meeting, which was attended by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, former ISI chief Hameed Gul and Rasool Bux Palejo.
The meeting condemned Bhutto’s assassination and demanded investigation into it by pre-November 3 judiciary. It announced to hold countrywide protest demonstrations, seminars and Quran khwani functions to condemn Bhutto’s killing on Monday.
The meeting reiterated its demand that President Pervez Musharraf step down and a government of national consensus be formed after restoring the constitution. It called upon the formation of an independent election commission to hold coming elections in a free, fair and transparent manner.
The meeting slammed the government for skyrocketing inflation and deteriorating law and order. It demanded release of political leaders including Aitzaz Ahsan and Sardar Akhtar Mengal but pressed the government to halt military operations in the country’s various parts.
