HRCP denounces harassment of Muneeza Jehangir

LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has denounced the abduction and harassment of TV producer and reporter Muneeza Jehangir and her team by armed men on Monday night.

Muneeza is HRCP chairperson Asma Jehangir’s daughter.

A press release issued on Tuesday said Muneeza and her team were taking pictures of election posters when the men surrounded them, beat up a team member, dragged the girls and shut them up in a politician’s election office.

The men also misbehaved with Asma Jehangir when she tried to get them released. The men abused the girls and pointed their weapons at them and at Asma Jehangir.

The HRCP called for the immediate disbandment of vigilante squads maintained by the establishment, as their interference with citizens was not only unlawful but could lead to chaos.

It said the culprits seemed to have the authority’s patronage and were reportedly backed by a couple of police constables in uniform. The HRCP demanded the interim rulers must investigate the issue and punish the people involved.

The Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) also denounced the incident, saying the government should punish the people responsible. staff report
