Free polls would help Pakistan grow: Rice
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Friday that a free and fair parliamentary election in January would help Pakistan grow as a moderate democratic country.
“President Musharraf has taken off his uniform and stepped down as chief of the army, and all major civilian leaders have now returned to that country,” she said in her year-end press conference.
Rice’s remarks on Friday came as the US administration voiced its confidence in overcoming this week’s new Congressional restriction on $ 50 million assistance out of a total $300 million counterterrorism aid for Pakistan. app
