BB meets Dar in Dubai: Emergency will not benefit the people: Benazir

LAHORE: Imposing emergency will not benefit Pakistan and General Pervez Musharraf will not impose it despite being encouraged by “political orphans” to do so, said PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto on Friday.

Talking to ARY television in Dubai, she said Gen Musharraf had earlier turned down the suggestion of imposing martial law for the betterment of the country and would not impose it now. “All the political parties will unite to oppose emergency if Gen Musharraf imposes it,” she added. She said extremists had threatened her for raising her voice for the common man. “Some groups are backing extremists with income derived from drugs,” she said.

Bhutto expressed reservations regarding voters’ lists. She said the PPP was not provided with a soft copy of the lists.

She said she had been asked not to return and demanded the Scotland Yard or the FBI be consulted in the Karachi blasts investigation. She said Nawaz Sharif was the first person to express solidarity with her following the blasts. She said she had come to Dubai for a short stay and vowed to return and attend a public meeting in Rawalpindi scheduled for November 9. Also on Friday, Benazir met PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar and discussed Pakistan’s political situation and matters of mutual interest, Aaj television reported.

It was reported that Bhutto phoned PML-N leaders in Jeddah and asked to meet them after arriving in Dubai. Nawaz Sharif then sent Senator Ishaq Dar to meet her. According to the channel, following the Bhutto-Dar meeting, there is a possibility of a one-on-one meeting between Bhutto and Sharif. The details of the Bhutto-Dar meeting were not available by the filing of this report. daily times monitor
