Pumps to close CNG dispensers from today

* Strike to continue until commission is not restored, say dealers

By Muhammad Yasir

KARACHI: Owners of private petrol filling stations will continue their strike on Saturday against a cut of 39 paisas in their commission on the sale of a litre gasoline (petrol).

Fuel shortage will get more severe in the country as the petroleum dealers, who are also running Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling-stations, have decided to discontinue the sale of CNG from Saturday.

President Petroleum Dealers Association Abdul Sami Khan told Daily Times that CNG was being sold throughout the day despite the strike but consumers were demanding petrol from the pump owners.

“The decision to discontinue the CNG sale was taken because of the pressure from consumers on pumps’ owners,” the president said.

“All stations with CNG and petrol dispensers would be closed from today.”

Mr Khan said that secretary of the concerned ministry informed him that the petroleum dealers (who are on strike) would be called soon but he did not mentioned any date of the meeting so far.

He vowed that petroleum dealers would continue their strike till the restoration of their commission.

On the other hand, owners of CNG stations announced on Friday that they would not take part in the strike that will continue on Saturday, while the fuel stations run by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) will remain open despite the strike.

Earlier during the day, petroleum dealers observed a complete strike. Heavy rush of vehicles and motorbikes was witnessed at OMC-owned petrol filling-pumps, who also enjoyed record sales.

Majority of the consumers filled petrol in advance in their vehicles a day earlier of the strike in order to save themselves from hassles during the strike.
