Musharraf wants good ties with CJP
LAHORE: General Pervez Musharraf said on Tuesday that he had personal relations with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, which he wanted to sustain.
Addressing a ceremony arranged by Pakistan Television (PTV) in Islamabad, he said the judiciary and executive must exist in harmony with each other and should work together for the national interest.
He urged the media not to portray terrorists and extremist as heroes.
Musharraf said Pakistan was going through a turbulent period and it was binding on the electronic and print media not to demoralise the nation. “Deny space to terrorists and extremists and don’t convert them into heroes,” he asked the media. He said the media’s independence was as necessary as the independence of the judiciary.
The president said that all appointments in the superior judiciary in the last seven years were made strictly on merit.
Musharraf said that he had accepted the Supreme Court’s verdict to restore the CJP because he did not have an ego problem.
The president said that 2007 was an election year and the nation would see transparent elections. Musharraf said extremism, economic development and the country’s political situation were the three main challenges confronting him.
Musharraf later launched the new look of Pakistan Television.
