Citizens ‘shed’ anger, protest load shedding

KARACHI: The city witnessed riots, Wednesday as well, in protest against the unannounced load shedding of electricity.

The residents and shopkeepers, enraged with power outages, protested against the KESC by burning tires on roads and as a result, traffic was blocked for several hours.

On Wednesday night, affected people, in various areas of Liaquatabad, came out on to the streets at about 8 p.m., due to power outage all day long. The protesters burnt tires and waste materials, and blocked roads from Ghareebabad to Liaquatabad no.10, and from Teen Hatti Chowrangi to Dakkhana Chowrangi.

Power was not restored in Liaquatabad till the filing of this report and the riots continued.

Earlier, in Gulbahar, Rizvia Society and Firdaus Colony, area residents came out on to the streets at about 4 p.m., to protest unannounced load shedding. The protesters burnt tires and blocked the main road from Lasbella Chowk to Nazimabad Chowrangi, due to which traffic was blocked for two to three hours. The protesters dispersed peacefully at 7 p.m., upon the restoration of power to the area.

Area residents of Old Golimar, Rexer Lines, rioted in the same manner for having no electricity all day long. The traffic was blocked on Manghopir Road.

Electricity was cut off for almost the whole day in Saddar. The shopkeepers of the area came out on to Zaibunnisa Street and M. A. Jinnah Road, in front of Naz Plaza, and burnt tires and waste materials. As a result, traffic was blocked from about 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The following areas had electricity cut off from 4 p.m. and had not been restored till the filing of this report: PECHS, Korangi Block 4, North Nazimabad Block B, N, 5 and L, Paposh Nagar Nazimabad, Gul Bahar Block 2, Badar Commercial Phase 5 DHA, 11-B North Karachi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 20, Metroville-III Gulzar-e-Hijri, Nazim Maulvi Tamizuddin Khan Road, Liaquatabad 6, Shershah, SITE town, Gulberg Block 12, Kashmir Road, Delhi Mercantile Society, 11-L North Karachi, Khodadad Colony, 7D-1 North Karachi, Pehlwan Goth, Bhittaiyabad, Sacchal Goth, and New Rizvia Society Scheme 33.
