Freed policemen saw firearms in Lal Masjid
ISLAMABAD: The four police officials, recently set free by Lal Masjid clerics, on Friday told Inspector General of Police (IGP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and intelligence officials that they had seen the clerics hold weapons at Lal Masjid where they were held hostage.
Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Aurangzeb and Constables Jahangir, Yasir and Muhammad Irshad were called to the IGP’s office where police and officials of intelligence agencies questioned them about the inside situation of Lal Masjid.
The freed policemen told them that the Lal Masjid force was trained to use arms. Sources said police officials were also asked about the presence of foreigners at the mosque.
They said the police had been gathering information about the mosque and Jamia Hafsa so that they could launch an operation against the seminary girls if they continued occupying a children’s library, which they have since January 20. Jamia Freedia students had kidnapped the four police officials, performing their duty near Lal Masjid, on May 18 to demand the release of 27 students caught by police. staff report
