Doctors stress hygiene as stomach patients double
LAHORE: Polluted water, unhygienic food and indisposed garbage are the main cause of gastroenteritis, diarrhoea, typhoid and hepatitis in summer, doctors and health experts told Daily Times on Sunday.
“We are receiving twice the number of gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and typhoid cases these days,” Dr Basit, deputy medical superintendent at Mayo Hospital’s emergency ward, said. “All these diseases are caused by unhygienic conditions,” he said, adding that the people should use boiled water to avoid troubles.
Dr Basit said that overflowing sewerage water and garbage were the breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses. “People should not eat chopped fruits sold by street vendors,” he said. He urged the government to improve sewerage and garbage disposal systems.
Dr Javed Butt, deputy medical superintendent at the Services Hospital, said that the cases of stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, gastroenteritis and typhoid increase in summer. He suggested people to increase water intake to avoid dehydration.
Dr Gohar Ali of the Children’s Hospital said that a number of children suffering from diarrhoea and typhoid were being brought to the hospital every day. He said that dehydration could be fatal in cases of diarrhoea and cholera. He said that seasonal fruits were good for health.
Dr Inam-ul-Haq, Executive District Officer for Health, said that the government was taking various steps to improve health conditions in the city. “The government is considering banning the sale of ice bars and unhygienic juices in the city,” he said. He said that the Health Department had also made a special cell to monitor teaching hospitals. Dr Inam said that the government would ensure chlorination of water. staff report
