US delegation meets Nawaz Sharif
LONDON: A delegation of the US House of Representatives sub-committee on National Security and Foreign Affairs met with PML-N quaid and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at his residence today.
The delegation, led by Chairman Representative (Rep) John Tierney along with Rep George Miller (D), Rep Betty McCollum (D), and Rep Patrick McHenry (R), is on its way to Pakistan for a three-day visit.
Nawaz Sharif welcomed the delegation and said, “Pakistan and US have always enjoyed a close friendship. During periods of military regimes people become concerned about the nature of cooperation. Pakistan enjoys an important geo-strategic position for US and it seeks US cooperation for its economic, security, and social development. This friendship should be based on mutual interests and democratic principles to ensure long-lasting friendship. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s national institutions have been made dysfunctional, contributing towards the present internal crisis. Strengthening democratic governance and the national institutions is our top most priority to progress Pakistan as a democratic nation. The people of Pakistan support moderate parties and ideas; General Musharraf exposes extremist threats to perpetuate his rule. He portrays a negative image of the country to use the extremists as a bargaining tool with US.”
Sharif said, “2007 is becoming a defining year for Pakistan. If the elections are rigged then the country will be plagued by a political crisis. The opposition parties are committed to restoring supremacy of the constitution, rule of law, and ensuring fair and free elections in the country.” The members of US delegation expressed support for the restoration of democracy and holding of fair and free elections in Pakistan. They said, “Congress is considering proposals to link Pakistan’s economic assistance with progress on fighting terrorism and restoration of democracy. The delegation will meet with representatives of government, political parties and the civil society to formulate recommendations in this regard.” online
