MMA wants assurance on hudood laws before signing CoD

By Mohammad Imran

ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) wants assurance from the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) that no political power will tamper with Islamic laws such as the Hudood Ordinance on assuming power, before it signs the Charter of Democracy (CoD).

The MMA will present its reservations on the Charter of Democracy in writing to the ARD in a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday).

Sources said that the MMA would seek assurance that any political party coming to power would not seek to amend or repeal Islamic laws, including the Hudood Ordinance. They said that the MMA would not sign the Charter of Democracy until all its reservations were addressed. They said that the MMA had reservation about a clause in the charter which said that political parties wanted to curtail powers of the Federal Shariat Court.

Sources in the religious alliance told Daily Times that the written reservations were likely to be handed over to the ARD in a meeting at the residence of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan tomorrow. MMA President Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Secretary General Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Hafiz Hussain Ahmed and Deputy Secretary General Liaquat Baloch would attend the meeting on behalf of the religious alliance, they said.

They said that the MMA also wanted a clear policy from the Pakistan People’s Party and the PML-N, major components of the ARD, on the ongoing military operations in the tribal areas and Balochistan. The MMA also wanted to know what the ARD would do to provide maximum autonomy to the provinces on coming to power, the sources said. They said that it would also seek a clear plan from the ARD regarding a protest campaign against the current regime.
