Jilted gymnast arrested in acid throwing case

Staff Report

KARACHI: The Rizvia police have arrested a man from Korangi Saturday for throwing acid on his ex-girl friend on Friday.

Asma, a gymnast by profession, was brought to Civil Hospital Karachi with her face completely burnt. Her ex-lover Jameel, also a gymnast, attacked her while they rehearsing for their performance Friday night.

The investigation police said that Asma and Jameel met about two-and-a-half years ago at a funfair from where the romance started. They were currently working at a circus that had come to Khajji Ground.

A month ago, the girl and her family refused to accept Jameel’s proposal and immediately after the rejected Asma got engaged.

On Friday, when both of them were busy in preparation for the night show at Khajji Ground, Jameel threw acid on Asma’s face and fled the scene.

Asma is a resident of Punjab Town, Wireless Gate, while Jameel is a resident of Korangi.

According to hospital sources one of Asma’s eyes was damaged and her tongue was also burnt. Sources said that her upper body was also affected. Investigation Officer Sub Inspector Shamshad said that the police had registered a case of attempt to murder on the basis of Asma’s initial statement, which she gave before falling unconscious.
