Musharraf’s book in Urdu cut Qaeda bounty claim

ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf has omitted from the Urdu version of his memoirs a claim that US intelligence paid Pakistan millions of dollars for Al Qaeda captives, an official said Monday.

In the original English edition of his book ‘In the Line of Fire’ launched in New York last month, Musharraf wrote that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) made the payments after Pakistan handed over more than 350 prisoners. But when at the weekend Musharraf officially launched his autobiography in Urdu – now called ‘Sub seh Pehley Pakistan’ or Pakistan First – the claim was no longer there.

“The president in an interview in the United States has already said that it was a mistake,” Musharraf’s spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said, referring to one of many interviews he gave during a US tour in September. The bounty payment allegations were denied by the United States. afp
