47 killed in Iraq violence

* Roadside bomb kills two British soldiers near Basra

BAGHDAD: Around 47 people were killed and 70 injured in deadly attacks across Iraq on Sunday, police said.

Six small Shia shrines were also damaged in a series of blasts around the Baqouba region.

Baghdad’s deadliest attack involved two suicide car bombs that exploded near a main checkpoint on a road leading to Baghdad’s international airport, killing at least 14 Iraqis and wounding six. Four roadside bombs killed another 12 Iraqis.

A roadside bomb on Saturday killed two British soldiers patrolling near Basra.

A suicide bomber rammed into a US military convoy, killing two Iraqi bystanders and wounding nine in a neighbourhood of Mosul.

Fighting between insurgents and police in Mosul killed one policeman and wounded three officers and a militant, said Mosul police chief Wathiq Mohammed.

A roadside bomb north of Baghdad exploded next to a convoy of bodyguards for Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, killing three and injuring another three, said Kurdistan Democratic Party official Kamal Kirkukly. Gunmen killed two Shia workers in a bakery in Baghdad.

Suspected insurgents wearing police uniforms kidnapped five Iraqis from two homes in Karbala. Police also found the bodies of five Iraqis who apparently had been kidnapped and killed by death squads.

A drive-by shooting killed a Shia taxi driver in Baghdad.

Four insurgents were killed in a gunbattle with Iraqi police during search operations in Dora. Five Iraqis were killed in a blast on Baghdad’s Palestine Street that targeted a passing police patrol. In Baiji, gunmen shot dead a man in front of his home, said police.

Meanwhile, an Iraqi militant group affiliated to Al Qaeda posted an Internet video of two men they said were fighters wanted by Saudi Arabia who were killed while attacking US-led forces in Iraq. agencies
