Love marriage couple facing death threats

BAHAWALPUR: A couple from Chak No 137/P of Rahimyar Khan, who married against the will of their families two months ago are receiving death threats from the family and the clan of the bride, Daily Times learnt.

Bushra Hafiz and Muhammad Irfan told Daily Times that the clan and the union council nazim had declared them karo kari. The family of the groom has left the area after the bride’s family attacked the groom’s house, tortured the groom’s sisters and ransacked the house. A first information report was lodged with the Rahimyar Khan Sadar Police, however, police failed to arrest the perpetrators, said Bashir Ahmad, the father of the groom.

The couple while talking to Daily Times on telephone from an undisclosed place appealed to the media to help them save their lives. Bushra Hafiz, 21, stated in marriage documents that she married her neighbour, Muhammad Irfan, with her on will on March 8, 2006, in the district court in Rahimyar Khan. She recorded her statement in the presence of a judicial official and with her husband. She said why did her father and other clan members wanted to kill her husband and his family. She said her marriage had been made a political issue, as the whole clan that had always opposed the nazim in local body polls had promised to vote for him if he supported them in catching and killing her and her spouse.

She said her father had forged her Nikah Nama with a minor, Sarmad Tariq, of their clan to have her husband arrested. She said Rahimyar Khan Sadar police was aware of the factual situation but failed to take any appropriate action to save her and her in-laws. staff report
