Political parties call Karachi blasts a conspiracy

* Allege government has let plot against religious parties take shape

Staff Report

LAHORE: Political parties across the country on Wednesday condemned the bomb blasts in Karachi, saying the government was inefficient and had ‘let’ the plot against religious parties take shape.

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed said a conspiracy was being hatched to push the religious leadership out of the way and let secular forces prosper in the country. He said the enemies of religious forces in Pakistan had carried out the attack, which had claimed many lives. He said the only way to overcome the situation was to accelerate efforts to implement an Islamic system and Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) ideology in the country.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Saad Rafiq, who was at the city courts for a hearing, said the Karachi blasts were a conspiracy to inflame sectarian violence and hatred in the country. “The people behind the incident want to portray Pakistan as a terrorist and extremist state and want to spoil relations between Pakistan and its Islamic neighbours,” he added.

Pakistanis recognised the threat from their enemies, but the rulers had shut their eyes to please their foreign masters, he said, adding that instead of stopping such incidents, law enforcement agencies were hounding the government’s political opponents.

Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians’ Punjab President Qasim Zia condemned the government for what he called the failure to control law and order and demanded an open and impartial inquiry into the incident. He also urged the government to arrest those responsible as soon as possible. “The government has failed to protect the people and the Karachi blasts are another indication of the government failing in its battle against terrorists,” he said, adding, “The government should resign immediately.”

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan’s (JUP) Punjab chapter and other component parties of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal also condemned the bomb blasts, calling them an attack on religious forces. “The blasts are a conspiracy against the Jamaat Ahle Sunnat and JUP. We demand the immediate arrest of the culprits or JUP will start a movement against the government,” said JUP President Shah Faridul Haq and senior leaders Anas Noorani and KM Azhar.
