Khyber Rifles takes up arms against Mufti and Pir

PESHAWAR: Reinforcements of Khyber Rifles continued to take action against the two conflicting groups in the tribal territory for the second consecutive day on Thursday, after the tribal jirga ordered the expulsion of Mufti Munir Shakir and Pir Saifur Rehman. Mufti accused the political administration of using unfair means in handling the situation and alleged that the authorities, to hide “their biased stance on the issue”, were using some people of the agency against him. Piles of various newspapers at Tehsil and Bara lay unattended, after Mufti asked tribesmen not to buy newspapers in the protest. A meeting of the Tribal Union of Journalist, (TUJ), Bara expressed disappointment over Mufti’s announcement and rejected Mufti’s claim of biased reporting. Haji Taj Mohammed, spokesman for Mufti, told Daily Times that report on Afridi tribe elders demanding Muftis expulsion were not true. He said that the administration had failed to provide them a list of the tribe elders who had apparently signed the document. The political authorities had claimed receiving an application signed by more than 300 Afridi tribe elders, demanding expulsion of the two tribal heads. However, the list was not made public. staff report
