Import of mild steel allowed from India

ISLAMABAD: The ministry of commerce allowed the import of mild steel from India on Saturday.

The mild steel will be used in the construction of earthquake-resistant steel structure houses, buildings for official use and other purposes in the earthquake-affected areas of the NWFP and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, an official told the Daily Times.

The ministry of commerce has included the mild steel for structures in the items’ list that are allowed for import in Pakistan from India. In this regard the ministry has issued a notification S R O (I)/2000. The SRO states that in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Imports and Exports (Control) Act of 1950 (XXXIX of 1950), the federal government is pleased to direct that the following further amendment shall be made to the Import Policy Order, 2005, namely: In the aforesaid order, in Appendix G, after serial number 772 in column (1) and the entries relating thereto in columns (2) and (3), the following new serial number and the entries relating thereto shall be added, namely: “773. Respective headings Mild steel for structures”.

The government of Pakistan through the import policy Order 2005 had notified a list of 722 items that import of which is allowed in Pakistan from India, and the new notification states that the mild steel structures will be the item number 773 import of which has been allowed from India. staff report
