Humayun meets business leaders in Los Angeles

ISLAMABAD: Minister of Commerce Humayun Akhtar Khan visited Los Angeles from on Nov 29 to Dec 1 for a series of meetings with California business and community leaders.

The purpose of his visit was to acquaint business leaders with the current favourable conditions for business in Pakistan and to promote bilateral trade and investment.

According to an official statement issued here on Friday, at a luncheon hosted by the Trade Division, Consulate-General of Pakistan, the minister provided members of the Southern California business community an update on the current economic and political situation in Pakistan, stressing the importance Pakistan places on building long- term business relationships with companies in the United States.

He emphasized that the outlook for a rapidly-growing economy in a country of almost 150 million people presented excellent opportunities in both the trade and investment sectors. He asked business people to visit Pakistan to see for themselves the extraordinary benefits Pakistan now offered as country, especially in the textile and apparel sector.

The largely-attended luncheon at a hotel was attended, among others, attended by Hal Kaltman, president of the Textile Association, Lee Harrington, president/ CEO of LAEDC and the World Trade Association, Rachid Sayouty, Director US Department of Commerce, Ms Ilse Matchek, Executive Director of the California Fashion Association, and representative of various chambers of commerce and business houses.

The minister visited the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a cooperative relationship that may include exchanges and collaboration between the FIDM and the premier fashion and design school in Pakistan, the Pakistan School of Fashion Design in Lahore.

Mr Humayun also met Dr Geoffrey Garrett, president of the Pacific Council on International Policy, to discuss possible programmes of cooperation with this prestigious institution. In addition, the minister received briefings from a number of businessmen actively involved in commerce with Pakistan, in an effort to gain a greater understanding of issues affecting bilateral trade.

The Council of Pakistan American Affairs hosted a dinner in honor of Minister Khan at which he addressed members of the Pakistani-American community on the subject of US- Pakistan trade and apprised them of efforts undertaken by the government of Pakistan in dealing with the devastation caused by the earthquake.
