PML-N, PPP will contest elections under ARD banner
LAHORE: Component parties of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) will jointly contest the next general elections against undemocratic parties and groups to ensure a truly democratic system in the country, said Mian Shahbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Talking to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab President Qasim Zia, who telephoned the PML-N leader at his London residence on Thursday, he said that only a true democratic system could bring the country out of the crisis it was facing and place it firmly on the path to progress.
He stressed the need of holding the next general elections in the presence of an independent election commission so that Pakistan’s democratic institutions could be strengthened and the legislative bodies could fulfill their constitutional role effectively. He said that all political and religious parties should continue trying to restore the constitution of 1973 to its original form.
Expressing sorrow over the tragic loss of life in the October 8 earthquake, he urged all political and religious groups to continue their relief efforts until the restoration of normalcy in these areas.
Conveying a message from PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, Zia said that the PPP was also willing to contest the next general election under the banner of the ARD. He said that the ARD movement would continue fighting real democracy till the original 1973 constitution was restored. staff report
