ANP will resist KBD: Bilour

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party (ANP) warned the federal government on Wednesday it would not allow the construction of the proposed Kala Bagh dam at any cost, as it would turn the NWFP into a quagmire and Sindh into a desert.

Commenting on President Musharraf’s statement about the proposed dam, Bashir Ahmed Bilour, the provincial president of ANP, said whenever a forward block was formed within the ruling party, it worried the government and “General Musharraf starts harping on the Kala Bagh dam” and the government starts working on the old British formula of “divide and rule”.

He said that President Musharraf and the federal government knew that all political parties had unanimously passed three anti-Kala Bagh dam resolutions in the NWFP Assembly and the Sindh and Balochistan assemblies had also passed similar resolutions.

He said the federal government was trying to divert public attention from real issues. He said the earthquake had devastated the NWFP and the spiralling prices had made people’s lives miserable, adding that the central government was attempting to sow seeds of discord among the provinces. He said the nation needed unity and solidarity at such a time.

Bashir Bilour, who is also ANP’s parliamentary leader in the NWFP Assembly, said the dam would turn the Frontier province into a marshland, adding that people had seen its proof during the recent heavy rains flooding Charsadda and Peshawar districts.
