Protest today against Bush-Blair plan to bomb Al Jazeera
ISLAMABAD: Journalists, lawyers and human rights activists will hold a rally today (Monday) in Islamabad against the reported plan by US President George W Bush to bomb Al Jazeera headquarters in Doha and some bureau offices elsewhere in the world.
The rally will begin at 12.30pm from China Chowk and terminate outside the UN office in the Saudi Pak Tower, where participants will submit a memorandum urging the UN general-secretary to use his clout over the US and British governments to clarify the reported plan to bomb Al Jazeera.
The British tabloid Mirror reported that President Bush told UK Prime Minister Tony Blair at a White House summit on 16 April, 2004, that he wanted to launch a military strike on Al Jazeera’s TV stations.
Following the controversy, the British government has warned the Mirror newspaper of legal action under the Official Secrets Act if the newspaper reports any further details from a secret memo that details a discussion between Blair and Bush on plans to bomb Al Jazeera. nni
