A tribute to city’s special children

AN awareness programme for special children at Hotel Avari last week was participated in by around 300 students from special education institutions in the city. Children demonstrated their artistic skills and talent in the first programme of its kind organised by Karachi-based artist and social worker Jimmy Engineer and Hotel Avari’s owner Byram D Avari.
The children sang national songs and presented a tableau and a variety of programmes. Heads of the special institutions, teachers and parents of students were also present. The programme was aimed at promoting awareness among people for special attention to special children.
Jimmy said he was trying to change people’s mentality so that special children’s lives could improve.
MORE than 60 teams will participate in the All Pakistan Allama Iqbal Bilingual Declamation contest 2005 to be held in memory of great philosopher and poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, also an old Ravian, at the Government College University (GCU), Lahore. The first round will begin on November 28 (Monday) and the final round will begin on November 29. Former foreign secretary Shamshad Ahmed Khan, an old Ravian, will grace the final round as the guest of honour.
GCU’s Brett Philosophical and Interdisciplinary Society organised a sitting at the Old Hall of the campus in connection with the Philosophy Day. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Aftab addressed the sitting.
METROPOLITAN University of Law and Social Sciences (MULSS) held Law Activities Day, which was organised by President of Academics Sara Naseer.
The 2nd Annual Inter-School Law Competition 2005 was participated by students from Lahore Grammar School, Lahore Alma, Aitchison College, LACAS and Salamat Girls School. The discussion revolved around murder and its defence under the English Law. Aisha Ahmad from Lahore Grammar School, Ghalib Market, won the “Best Prospective Lawyer” award, while Ansar Aftab from LACAS and Zeeshan Hassan from Aitchison College won 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. The consolation prize went to Maryam Akmal from Lahore Grammar School, Ghalib Market.
The university also held “All Pakistan Inter-Collegiate Law Activity 2005” which discussed need for arbitration centres in Pakistan.
FORMAN Christian (FC) College’s Halqa-e-Urdu Adab held its first session on critique. Akhtar Shumar, head of the Urdu Department, chaired the meting. MA Urdu students including Ali Shahid, Ameera Fatima, Amina Ghaffar, Ehtsham Khalid, Hafiz Aftab Mustafa, Muhammad Ali, Rao Abrar Ahmed, Junaid Ashraf, Abrar Ahmed and Shehryar presented their work.
PROF Dr Manzoor Ahmad, Lahore University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences vice chancellor, has returned home from an official visit to the United States after receiving an award and signing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Washington State University (WSU). During his 8-day stay in the US, Dr Manzoor met WSU President Dr V Lane Rawlins, discussed with him education and research programmes and formally signed a MoA, under which the two universities would collaborate in research, education and economic development programmes.
A delegation from Sadiq Public School in Bahawalpur met Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool at Governor’s House and presented him a Rs 2 million cheque for the President’s Relief Fund for Earthquake Victims. Principal Prof Muhammad Asif led the delegation including Maliha Hassan, Ghzanfar Ali, Muhammad Usman, Wardah Noor, Maha Owasi, Maryam Gillani and Muhammad Shahzad.
APWA College for Women held a funfair last week. Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan, federal parliamentary secretary for Cabinet, graced the event as chief guest and Dr Masood Akhtar Sheikh as guest of honour.
LAHORE College for Women University (LCWU) arranged its annual Inter College Table Tennis competition last week. LCWU students won the competition. Saadia Aslam, Quratulain and Madeeha Khan gave great performances. Anam Bilal, Sana Akbar and Hira Mahmood also played well. LCWU has been winning the championship for the last 17 years.
THE annual prize distribution of 18th Science Competition 2005 was held at the National Science and Technology Museum in the city. Tanvir Nabi Khan from Dawakhana Hakeem Ajmal Khan was the chief guest.
