Gulberg nazim says he won’t bow to influence

* Anti-encroachment drive begun in Main Market and adjoining areas

Staff Report

LAHORE: Gulberg Town administration, with the assistance of area’s traders’ associations, launched an operation against encroachments in Gulberg Main Market and adjoining markets on Monday. Town Nazim Faraz Chaudhry said that the operation was launched without balking to anyone’s influence in the area.

The operation was carried out at Auriga Shopping Centre, KG Stores, GM Stores, Universal Stores and adjoining markets and the town administration snatched encroached goods worth millions of rupees. The town nazim and town Municipal Officer Ali Raza Bukhari supervised the operation. Gulberg’s town nazim told Daily Times that the administration had decided to launch a campaign against encroachments because they had become a major nuisance in up-market areas of the city.

He said the town administration had served a notice at all markets to remove encroachments otherwise action would be taken against them. Shopkeepers and traders’ representatives had been requested to support the administration in its campaign, he added. The administration sealed 150 stalls and fined their owners during the operation.

Meanwhile, the City Government Lahore, in its first informal session, approved a fund generation programme for earthquake victims at union council level. A comprehensive fund raising policy was approved under which Lahore Nazim Mian Amir Mehmood asked each union council nazim to raise Rs 200,000, each town anzim to collect Rs 1 million and the members elected on reserve seats were asked to accumulate Rs 50,000.

Pakistan Muslim League Secretary General and Allama Iqbal Town Nazim Khawaja Sohail Mahmood Butt was appointed coordinator of this fund generation campaign.

Mian Amir said that it was time to support the people of Azad Kashmir and the NWFP. He was told that on Sunday, almost 52 trucks containing relief goods and medicines were sent to AJK and NWFP.

PML sources told Daily Times that the party had decided to back Khawaja Tahir Zia for district naib nazim. The elections for naib nazims in Punjab might be held in the second week of December. The date has yet to be finalised.
