IGs’ meeting mulls strategy to enforce kite-flying ban
ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the federal and provincial inspector generals of police (IGPs), chaired by the registrar of the Supreme Court (SC), was held on Sunday to formulate a uniform strategy for the implementation of the SC’s ban on kite flying and manufacturing across the country.
The meeting was convened after the chief justice took stern notice of the violation of the ban in various parts of the country. The minutes of the meeting were not shared with the media. However, sources privy to the meeting told Daily Times that all participants suggested various ways to deal with the issue in view of the prevailing commercial, social and cultural situation.
Some of the participants were of the view that an immediate ban on kite manufacturing would cause a recession and result in thousands of people losing their jobs.
It was suggested that district nazims be asked to explore new avenues for employment of all those people who were involved in kite manufacturing.
There was an agreement on the fact that the responsibility of monitoring the implementation of the ban should be entrusted to the district governments and district police officers should be responsible for any violations in their respective areas, sources said. The chairperson said that new district governments are functioning in almost all districts of the country and provided the best infrastructure to help implement this ban across the board. A report regarding the outcome of the meeting would be presented to the Chief Justice of Pakistan. mohammad kamran
