Cargo Train Express will promote trade, says CM

Staff Report

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways’ new cargo train express will promote trade and commerce and the government’s reforms have started to revive people’s confidence in the railways, said Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. He was addressing the launching ceremony of the cargo service on Tuesday.

He said the previous governments had been considering privatising Pakistan Railways and its closure was feared, but the current government had gradually improved the organisation with better planning under Federal Railways Minister Mian Shameem Haider’s leadership. He said that measures to improve the system were being adopted.

The chief minister said industries in the country were rapidly progressing, referring to the investment of over $ 1 billion in the Chakwal cement industry. He hoped trade would multiply with better transportation of raw material, and said development of means of communication was extremely important in increasing the pace of domestic and foreign investment.

Mian Shameem Haider said the cargo service would not only facilitate trade but also earn revenue for railways. Federal Secretary and the Railway Board Chairman Shakeel Durrani was also present on the occasion.

Kashmir PM thanks chief minister: Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan thanked Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi for the Punjab government’s rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts for earthquake victims, in a letter. He said he was grateful to the Punjab government, the Provincial Assembly, the people of Punjab and welfare organisations on behalf of the government and people of Kashmir.

The prime minister said the Elahi’s deep sympathy and sacrifice has reaffirmed Kashmiris’ belief in their fraternal ties with the people of Pakistan.

He said Kashmiris were thankful to MPAs Dr Farzana Nazir, Dr Muzaffar Sheikh, Dr Shazia Chand and the Muslim League Doctors Wing for their relief efforts in far flung areas and their love and support for earthquake victims.
