Imran Khan in US to raise quake relief funds
WASHINGTON: Imran Khan is leading an ambitious effort later this week to raise funds for earthquake relief and rehabilitation.
The former Pakistan cricket captain and member of the National Assembly will be the star attraction at a $100 to $200 plate dinner being organised at San Jose, California on November 18. The event organisers hope to tap potential donors from the well-endowed Silicon Valley and the larger San Francisco Bay area. People are expected to come from various parts of the sprawling state, including Los Angeles, Sacramento, Davis and Stockton.
According to the organisers, medical teams from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Lahore are already working in Abbottabad with “planned follow up stints in collaboration with other hospitals”. A primary care hospital is to be set up near Bagh for six months and plans are underway to open more hospitals in other areas as well. The event has been arranged by the Human Development Fund, the Citizen’s Foundation, the Indus Entrepreneurs, the Indian Community Centre and the Organisation of Pakistani Entrepreneurs. Imran Khan will address the guests, providing them with an eyewitness account of the widespread destruction caused by the October 8 temblor. A documentary film of the quake-hit areas is also to be shown. The money raised will go to the Imran Khan Foundation for Shelter and Medical Relief for the South Asian Earthquake. khalid hasan
