40 teams of skilled manpower sent to affected areas

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool bade farewell to 40 teams of skilled workers at Fortress Stadium on Saturday, which would visit the October 8 earthquake affected areas. The All Pakistan Contractors Association made these teams, which include electricians, carpenters, masons, black smiths and assistants. 500 members of the teams will be involved in rehabilitation operations in the affected areas. They will rebuild houses and other buildings with funds provided by the government. The governor said the Punjab government had sent 7 million tons of food, 1.95 million blankets and medicines for 800,000 people. He said 15 teams would go to Muzaffarabad, 10 to Bagh and 15 to Mansehra. The governor said that more teams would be despatched from Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore and Multan soon. The Punjab government had undertaken sanitation work in Muzaffarabad and Bagh and Punjab police had secured roads in the affected areas, he added. He said the Punjab government’s family adoption programme would help around 100,000 affected families. He said the government had also established relief camps in Chakwal and Fateh Jang. Victims were being provided with free medical treatment in hospitals, he said, adding that the Punjab government was giving free books to revive the education system. app

WHO praises Pakistan Army, doctors for helping quake victims

LAHORE: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has appreciated the role of the Pakistan Army and doctors for extending prompt and effective aid to earthquake victims. “Pakistani doctors are second to none in the world and demonstrated a unique sense of duty and responsibility. They reached the inaccessible mountains and valleys and conducted surgical operations and amputations to save human lives in the earthquake hit-areas” sources said. They said that 40 medical teams of the Punjab Health Department were working in the earthquake areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Twenty teams of doctors, paramedic staff and others had been despatched to earthquake-hit areas while another batch of 20 teams would soon replace the medical teams posted there, sources added. The WHO also praised the Punjab government that established 40 hospitals and health centres in earthquake affected areas. app

Nishtar Colony ASI suspended, SHO issued notice

LAHORE: City Police Chief (CPC) Tariq Saleem Dogar suspended an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Nishtar Colony police station for illegally detaining a boy in a private torture cell and issued a show-cause notice to the Nishtar Colony station house officer. Mansha, a resident of Nishtar Colony, submitted an application to CPC Dogar saying that ASI Ashfaq Ahmad had detained his 15-year-old son Imran illegally. Dogar told Superintendent of Police (Discipline) Riaz Ahmad Gahra to inquire about the matter. SP Gahra visited the torture cell in an under construction factory, found Imran and submitted a report to Dogar, on which he suspended ASI Ahmad and issued show cause notice to the SHO of Nishtar Colony police station. staff report

Police gets record of Bano’s son’s phone calls

LAHORE: A special team of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Model Town obtained the cell phone records of Rohi Bano’s deceased son Ali during their investigations. The police said that Ali’s friends were innocent and arrested five other suspects. The police had arrested Zahid, Farrukh and Suhail for investigations. They drank liquor with Ali in his house and later left the house with him. staff report
