CM says his ‘Support A Family’ programme is being praised

Staff Report

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi said the ‘Support A Family’ programme was being praised locally and internationally and people should strive for its success, because it would allow earthquake victims to be rehabilitated permanently.

Addressing earthquake victims at a tent village in Chakwal, he announced job opportunities for educated October 8 earthquake victims in local industries and said dwellers of tent villages would be moved to houses constructed in the district’s various colonies to prevent them from facing difficulties in the rains.

Elahi announced free books and education for the affected children, a Rs 1 million ‘Eidi’ for the victims, and 100 sewing machines for the knitting centre set up in the tent village. He said Punjab’s tent villages were playing an important role in provision of relief to quake victims, and promised all necessities including education, health, food, residence and employment to victims in tent villages.

Elahi said the Punjab government had sent relief goods worth Rs 1.75 billion so far and the provision of items of daily use would continue. He said 13,000 beds were available for quake victims in Punjab’s hospitals, where 4,000 patients were currently being treated. He said 250 medical teams from Punjab were serving in the quake-hit areas.

He said federal and provincial ministers, by celebrating Eid with quake victims, had proved that they wanted to share their sufferings, and praised Chakwal’s notable personalities for celebrating Eid in the tent village.

Representing the tent village residents, Raja Khursheed said they would never forget the generosity of the people of Punjab, and relief activities under the chief minister’s patronage were laudable.

Provincial Communications and Works Minister Chaudhry Zaheerud Din briefed the chief minister on relief activities and setting up tent villages.

Chakwal District Nazim Sardar Ghulam Abbas, Provincial Cooperatives Minister Col (r) Muhammad Anwar and administrative officers were present on the occasion.

The chief minister later addressed a meeting of union council and tehsil nazims of Chakwal, and visited Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Women Wing Chakwal President MPA Maha Raja’s house where he addressed a PML workers’ gathering.
