FO condemns sketches of Holy Prophet
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday condemned the publication of drawings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a Danish newspaper, which is considered sacrilegious because the religion bans depictions of the prophet (PBUH).
“We strongly condemn this act,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said. “I think this Islamophobia and acts of this nature create the divide between religions which we are making efforts to bridge.”
On September 30, the Jyllands-Posten daily printed 12 drawings by Danish cartoonists who had been asked to illustrate the prophet (PBUH).
Tasnim said that the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, a grouping of 57 Muslim states, is collectively condemning the newspaper drawings, which have angered Danish Muslims. Jyllands-Posten has declined to apologise, citing freedom of speech.
The spokeswoman said the sketches were “totally an uncalled-for act and an insult to the millions of Muslims in this world”. Last month, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen declined to meet with 10 ambassadors from predominantly Muslim countries who wanted to discuss the publication of the offensive drawings. Fogh Rasmussen has said religions and governments should endure media criticism. Tasnim said that the OIC had complained to the United Nations about the newspaper. ap
