‘Passport to Nawaz has nothing to do with politics’

GUJRAT: President Pervaiz Musharraf`s decision to issue passport to Mian Nawaz Sharif has nothing to do with the country’s politics as it was made on humanitarian grounds, Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi told reporters at Zahoor Elahi Palace on Saturday.

He said that the October 8 earthquake had left nearly 73,000 people dead and thousands of others disabled and orphaned. “The Punjab government will support 100,000 families under the Support a Family Programme and every deserving family will be given Rs 6,000 per month, ” the chief minister said, adding that the data would be collected from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). He said that the Punjab government had decided to set up its centres in Muzzafarabad and Mansehra with its main office at Chief Minister’s House,” said Mr Elahi, adding that the programme would help solve the problems of education and unemployment of the quake-hit families.

He said that PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and party secretary Syed Mushahid Hussain would visit Europe and America this month to persuade overseas Pakistanis to adopt a quake-hit family.

“At least 1.5 million and 500,000 Pakistanis are living in Europe and America with 80 per cent from Punjab. I hope at least 30 per cent of such overseas Pakistanis will agree to support an affected family,” Mr Elahi said.

Yasin Malik discusses relief activities with Elahi: Kashmiri leader Yasin Malik called on Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi at the CM’s house on Sunday and discussed relief and rehabilitation activities for earthquake victims.

The CM thanked Yasin for coming to Pakistan and said that his participation in relief activities showed that the people of occupied Kahsmir supported their brethren. staff report
