Programme to rehabilitate tourism industry

ISLAMABAD: The government has launched a crash program to rehabilitate the tourism industry, which was affected by the October 8 earthquake and was once a great tourist attraction.

The plan’s blue print will be given to the prime minister after Eid for approval, under which necessary infrastructure in Balakot, Abbottabad and other affected areas will be rebuilt before the summer season. Federal Tourism Minister Dr GG Jamal said that tourism was the affected areas’ main source of income and formed 60 percent of the gross domestic product, therefore rebuilding these areas was necessary. The minister said that ‘visit Pakistan year’ would now be launched in 2007 instead of 2006.

The tourism industry’s income would be donated to the president’s relief fund, Jamal said, adding that victims’ rehabilitation was the most important thing. He said that 10 percent revenue from PTDC motels would donated to the president’s relief fund for next two years. nni
