Govt, NGOs continue relief efforts
* 1,132 trucks sent from Gujranwala so far

LAHORE: Government and non-government organisations, civil society groups, educational and health institutions, political groups, business community and people from various walks of life continued their rescue and relief operation for the October 8 earthquake victims of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Northern Areas (NA) and NWFP on Tuesday.
Punjab Govt: A total of 1,132 truckloads of relief items have been sent to calamity-hit areas from the Gujranwala region so far. Gujranwala district coordination officers (DCOs) and nazims have set up relief camps and they appealed to rich people and philanthropists to donate generously for quake victims. According to an official statement, Gujranwala District Nazim Muhammad Fayyaz Chatha and DCO Khalid Masood Chaudhry have sent 310 trucks of relief items so far. The statement said that about 243 trucks of relief items and 15 trucks of furniture had been sent from Gujrat, 84 trucks of relief goods from Hafizabad, 127 from Mandi Bahauddin, 297 from Sialkot and 80 from Narowal. More medical teams were also sent to the affected areas from Gujranwala on Tuesday, the statement added.
A total of 125 trucks of blankets, quilts, food, mineral water and medicines were dispatched from DG Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur.
Punjab governor: Punjab Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool sent a team of volunteers with tool kits, prepared by the Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA), to the affected areas for repairing damaged buildings. The governor sent the team from Governor’s House on Tuesday.
Army Public Schools: Students of Army Public schools and colleges (Mangla) donated Rs 12,000 to the President’s Relief Fund. They bought toys, Eid gifts and books worth Rs 13,000 for quake victims from their pocket money, said an Inter Services Public Relations statement on Tuesday. The material was being sent to the affected areas to help victims. Federal Inter College Mangla Cantt students also donated Rs 91,920 to the President’s Relief Fund.
MPA: Engineer Shahzad Elahi, a Punjab Assembly member representing minorities, sent two trucks of relief goods including blankets and warm clothing, to the Pakistan Muslim League House in Islamabad for distributing them among affected people.
Church of Pakistan: A total of 10 trucks will be sent to affected areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir today and Lahore Bishop Alexander John Malik will also distribute Eid gifts to affected children, a statement said. Poultry Association: The Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) has donated relief goods and cheques to the President’s Relief Fund. Recently, a cheque of Rs 10 million was presented to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
