Four-year-old killed by stray kitestring

Staff Report

LAHORE: A four-year-old girl died when stray kitestring cut her throat in the Shadbagh police precincts, becoming the first victim of kite flying after the Supreme Court’s ban on the sport.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Aamir Zulfiqar Khan suspended the station house officer (SHO) and beat officer of the police station concerned for negligence.

Aurangzeb’s daughter Tehreem (4) was on her way to the market with her uncle and two elder sisters on a motorbike and Tehreem was sitting on the bike’s fuel tank. When the four reached Nazim Abad, stray kitestring cut Tehreem’s throat. Tehreem’s uncle, Muhammad Ahmed, rushed her to Mayo Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead.

The city division superintendent of police said that Muhammad Javed, acting Shadbagh station house officer, and beat officer Muhammad Sarwar were suspended from duty for showing negligence and a case was registered against Fakhari Butt on Tehreem’s father’s complaint. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aamir Zulfiqar Khan said that police would take action against people who were not acting in accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision. He appealed to people to cooperate with police because it could not deal with the menace alone.

The SSP said that police had launched a crackdown on kite flying and had arrested 12 people from various parts of the provincial capital. Tanveer, Kamran and Azim were arrested by Mughalpura police; Shafique, Mudasar, Kareem by Icchra police; Aftab and Zulfiqar by Litton Road police; Muhammad Saddique by Kotlakhpat police; Muhammad Akram by Harbanspura police; Jawad Shah by South Cantt police; Shaukat by Rang Mehal police; Murtaza by Mochi Gate police; Kashif by Akbari Gate police; Mubeen and Yaseen by Lorry Adda police; Shahzad and Ujrat Gull by Qilla Gujjar Singh police and Usman by Mustafabad police for violating SC’s orders, he said, adding that police also registered 19 cases in this regard.
