Govt sends another 100 trucks loaded with relief goods

* Various govt departments also send trucks on CM’s directives

LAHORE: The Punjab government has sent 100 more truckloads of eatables, tents, blankets, medicines and other relief items from various districts of Punjab on Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s directives for the relief of earthquake victims of Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas on Thursday.

According to a report by Punjab Relief director general on Thursday, 25 trucks from Lahore, eight each from Gujrat and Khushab, 20 from Mandi Bahauddin, four each from Kasur, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, Mianwali and Dera Ghazi Khan, three each from Jhang, Lodhran, Sahiwal and Bhakkar, one from Bahawalnagar and two each from Jhelum, Rahimyar Khan and Muzaffargarh were sent to the assistance of earthquake victims. Of the 100 trucks, 47 are of eatables, 12 of blankets, one of medicines and 40 of miscellaneous items.

According to reports, the Punjab government has so far sent 445 trucks loaded with relief goods for earthquake victims. Of the 445 trucks, 220 trucks contain eatables, 16 contain tents, 32 contain blankets, 19 contain medicines and 158 contain miscellaneous items.

Presiding over a meeting at the Muslim League House on Thursday, Punjab Communication and Works Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin said that 50 truckloads of relief goods had been sent from Lahore and other districts of the province for the rehabilitation of earthquake victims of Azad Kashmir and NWFP.

A team of 50 wardens of the Punjab Prisons Department led by Lahore Range deputy inspector general has been sent to the affected areas. The team will set up a camp at Balakot and will provide medical assistance to the injured. The department has already sent a consignment of 20,000 blankets to Azad Kashmir and collected Rs 650,000 for the relief of earthquake victims.

The Livestock Department has also dispatched three trucks loaded with relief goods for the earthquake victims in Mansehra. Presiding over an emergent meeting at the Veterinary Research Institute Lahore, Livestock Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh Muhammad said that the relief goods include 700 packets of dates, biscuits, candles, match boxes, tea, sugar, 2,200 mineral water bottles, 300 quilts and about 3000 clothing items. He said that eight department employees were also sent along with the trucks who would distribute the relief goods among victims. “The Livestock Department employees are collecting more relief goods for earthquake victims,” he added.
