PESHAWAR: In view of the residential requirements of the ever increasing population of the province especially the provincially metropolis, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to launch mega housing schemes with availability of all basic civic amenities including safety and security in view.
These schemes include Mega Education City M-1 Nowshera, Mega Sports City 
Peshawar, New City Abbottabad and New City & Tourism Resort Booni Chitral.
A high level meeting to review the progress on the proposed schemes was held with Chief Minister Pervez Khattak in the chair. The chief minister stressed the need for new housing schemes to meet the residential requirements of the growing population and reduce pressure on the existing urban localities. He directed the quarters concerned to take effective and result oriented measures to this effect on emergency grounds.
The chief minister said that since consultants had been hired for initiating work on developmental schemes therefore, there was no justification for any delay in the execution of the schemes adding that now progress on the schemes should be visible.
He agreed to the proposal of the authorities that all the proposed housing schemes should not be executed by the housing department itself rather a separate construction company be formed for their execution with entire responsibility of implementation, timely completion, quality of work and payments etc.
He was assured that all these schemes are planned to be of international standard equipped with all modern civic facilities.
Briefing the participants about the proposed Mega Education City project, authorities of the Housing Department told that 80,000 acres of land had been identified for this mega city near Kernal Sher Khan Interchange on Motorway M-1. Pre-feasibility of the project was also completed and presented to the competent authority.
Similarly, hiring the services of firms for planning and designing the project is in final stages and 10 consultant firms of international repute interested in the project have given presentation to the authorities about their capacity to handle such project, it was informed.
Regarding the peculiarities of the housing scheme, the authorities told, 30% of the total area of the scheme will be specified for educational institutions including universities wherein state of the art centers for education and research will be established. 
It was further revealed that award of contract to consultants for detail planning and design would be made by this month while practical work on the project would be started by September this year.
Regarding the proposed Mega Sport City Peshawar it was told by the authorities of housing department that the scheme would be setup on a total area of more than 14000 acre situated between Peshawar and Nowshera.
The scheme to be setup with an estimated cost of Rs1.5 to 2.00 trillion, will be five times bigger than Hayatabad Township and cater for the residential needs of more than 600,000 people, it was told.The chief minister directed the concerned high ups to execute these projects phase wise under public private partnership. He stressed that all the new and old housing schemes must not be confined to paper works only rather it should be put on ground, and the mistakes committed in the execution of the previous projects must not be repeated.
