Special cell to monitor GSP Plus conventions’ implementation

LAHORE: Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar has said that the government has established a special department to monitor the implementation of all the 27 conventions of the GSP Plus status, as the textile exports are going to be doubled in four years due to this facility.
The governor was speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday. LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari presented the address of welcome, while Senior Vice President Mian Tariq Misbah, Vice President Kashif Anwar, former presidents Salahuddin Ahmed Sahaf, Tariq Hameed, Mian Anjum Nisar, Mian Misbahur Rehman, Shahid Hassan Sheikh, Muhammad Ali Mian, Irfan Qaiser Sheikh and PIAF Chairman Tahir Javaid Malik also spoke on the occasion.
The governor said that the implementation of all EU conventions on the GSP Plus status would not only help the country to get the status extended for another term but would also burnish the image of the country. “Only because of the GSP Plus status, the Chinese investors have decided to make $2 billion investment in Pakistan, which is a great achievement of the government,” Sarwar said while giving the credit for the grant of GSP Plus Status to Pakistan to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The governor said that he was thankful to the prime minister as securing the GSP Plus task was assigned to him by the prime minister for his deep understanding of the EU parliamentary system. He paid rich tributes to the business community for contributing to the national exchequer despite electricity and gas shortage. He agreed with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce that discrimination in the supply of gas and electricity to various sectors of the economy must end.
Talking about corruption, adulteration and law and order situation, the governor said that the present government has zero tolerance against these social evils and was making all-out efforts to nip the evil in the bud. He said that these social evils had destroyed the whole society, and all the segments of society would have to make concerted efforts to get rid of this menace. Sarwar assured all his support to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the early resolution of the issues and challenges being faced by the business community.
“My doors are open for 24 hours for the business community.” He said that the business community should extend cooperation to the government for ensuring clean drinking water to the masses as the existing water filtration plants were not up to the mark. Speaking on the occasion, LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari appreciated the Punjab governor for making untiring efforts to get GSP Plus Status. He said that this opportunity could only be tapped if the business community was provided enabling atmosphere for fulfilling the requirements of the GSP plus.
He said that there was no doubt that the Punjab government was committed to creating a congenial atmosphere for foreign investors but there was a need to make such efforts target-oriented for quick results. Engineer Sohail Lashari said that the government would have to give incentives to the local investors to encourage investments because if the local investors have confidence, they would be able to convince their foreign counterparts.
